Week 9

Now it’s getting serious! I’ve completely lost my hygrometer in the undergrowth since last week and all the plants are coming on leaps… gonna need to seriously consider getting them out of the box, into bigger pots and on the windowsill at this rate… still too early to think about getting them outside in the polytunnel but maybe a good time to think about hardening them off during the bright sunny days and bringing them back inside overnight. Would be good to give them some real rays… watch this space!

Mmm mmm you can’t beat a cheeky sauerdog with a few careful drops of my Bourbon barrel aged yellow habanero chilli sauce and a healthy dose of crispy onion crack! It was only half way through I realised I should have put sauerkraut on both hot dogs… the Emmental cheese made up for it… kinda

🍟This has got to be the easiest mega boost to a meal possible. Just add and shake! 🍟

I devised my Came Up Rosemary Chip Dust simply because I was tired of paying crazy prices for boring takeaway seasoned fries. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely see the value and worth in a banging, quality smash burger or piece of perfectly seasoned, fried to perfection chicken, but £4.50 for a single potato dipped in oil and then carelessly thrown in that standard Costco bought Peri Peri Salt… enough was enough! We can all do better people.

Now you can have banging spicy chips at home, on your own terms! 🔥🔥🔥

If you really want to mix things up a notch why not do half in the rosemary habanero seasoning and the rest in one of my other BBQ mixes… You won’t look at home chips the same way again once you’ve tried the Pretty Thai’D Up Green Curry or Honey Jerk rubs on them too!

Week 8

Here we are at 2 months chilli lovers! Thought I’d add in the progress shots from the past weeks to show you the week by week growth side by side. I’m still a little behind where I wanted to be at this point due to my early mistakes with the Root Riot cubes but as you can see the plants are now filling up the vitopod nicely and looking super healthy. Really pleased with the seeds I got from @jimmypickles5 and @townsendchiliandspice for this year’s grow. Great germination rates and beautiful looking, vigorous babies. Proof again that’s it’s worth going to a reputable seller for over buying off eBay!

Having a fancy pants lunch today with this banging sourdough and @cornish_charcuterie duck Rilette��… basically confit pulled duck breast! Absolutely banging and pairs perfectly with my Brixton Blues sauce. The sweet tangy blueberry and warm aromatics really set the meat on fire 🔥

Week 7

The box is now beginning to fill up nicely and all the plants are finally looking healthy and back on track after a couple of good doses of @plantmagicuk Root Stim and Oldtimer Grow. Now the real fun can start as we should start to see pretty explosive growth as the box turns into a jungle. I think it’s now time to start making other allotment favourites… Tomatoes, sprouts, leeks, cabbages and a bunch of herbs!🌿

🌶️Chilli Update🌶️

Week 6

As we come to the end of 6 weeks since I started my seeds, I’m pleased to say the plants have, all but one, fully recovered from the nutrient problem I had and are starting to put on some serious vegetative growth! I’ve removed the propagator lid entirely and placed a fan on the box to stimulate higher levels of transpiration and make the plants more sturdy. I’m hoping this will help when I reach the hardening off stage once nighttime temperatures are consistently above 10degC!

Can you feel it? That’s right, BBQ season is here! Sun’s out and it’s time to stock up and get ahead. I’m on the case and first up is my Came Up Rosy all purpose seasoning. Epic as a chip dust in the colder months but as the mercury rises it’s time to think outside the box and start using it on other things. My favourite use is definitely on smoked, crispy chicken thighs! GET IN!

Very pleased to shout about receiving another Level 5 Food Hygiene rating yesterday! As always it’s a bit of a process but something I actually enjoy doing as I get to ask a lot of questions in return to better my understanding of the system and any new policies. @foodgov Tim was an absolute legend!

Polytunnel is all cleared out and ready to rock n roll. I need to find one last pallet to finish off the staging on the left hand side and add a fourth middle stage then we are golden. Oh I also need to plug all the tiny holes the damn birds have pecked in the cover over winter!

🌶️Chilli Update🌶️

The chilli babies are progressing nicely. I had to pot them up from the @growthtechnology root riot cubes last Sunday as was getting some pretty severe nutrient deficiencies. (Mg, Ca and S I think!). This was mostly centred on my @jimmypickles5 JP Piranha plants. These were first to germinate and a bit further along so took the brunt of it. I can only guess that this was due to poor uptake of the @plantmagicuk Oldtimer feed into the cubes or they were drying out too quickly. If anyone has any tips on these cubes to help me in the future that would be great as this is my first use of them! Anyways I’ve now got the cubes buried in @plantmagicuk Soil Supreme and gave a good half dosage feed of their Grow. After a week, they are bouncing back and the yellow/stunted leaves have all started to go full green from yellow and I’m seeing substantial growth. PHEW! Time to start thinking about clearing out the polytunnel and sanitising all my pots in readiness for them!

Another Monster Mash of garlic and cayenne chillies. That’s 150kg in the back pocket… should last a couple of months!

Another batch of the incredible @wholebeast @hopburnsblack Disco Tanger collaboration chilli sauce is in da house! This is an Italian Agro Dolce style sauce, so think sweet, think tangy, think spicy… Hope you’ve got your dancing shoes on as this one will sweep you right off your feet!

The Brixton Volcano!
